Robert Matthews of EMA said the members of the team were struck by the beauty of the waterfront location when they visited the site and wanted to design a complex that maintains that relationship to the shoreline as well as guaranteeing continued public access to the lake.

"We cannot express how deeply moved we were by this site," Robert said.

"This is not just a theatre, this is a place where people can come together in a place of collaboration and activity." said Craig Dykers, Snohetta's principal architect.

Dykers said the Norwegian firm is comfortable taking on such a task, saying the similarities between the two contries' cultures outweigh the differences.

"Norwegians and canadians feel an affinity for one another," he said. "We both know what it's like to be cold."
